The Story Behind Our Spices

Award-Winning Taste with roots

A Pestle, a Mortar, and a New Beginning

In 1972, at just 14 years old, Shemin was forced to leave her home in Kampala, Uganda. Of the few precious possessions she could carry with her to the UK, she chose one that would define her future: her pestle and mortar.

Freshness Without Compromise

After arriving in the UK, Shemin found that the mass-produced curry pastes on the shelves lacked the vibrancy and soul of the food she loved. She knew she could do better. Using that same pestle and mortar, she began crafting pastes that prioritised taste, freshness, and versatility.

A Family Legacy Realised

What started in a home kitchen grew into a family legacy. When Shemin’s son, Jamie, returned from China to join the business, we moved from the kitchen table to SALSA-accredited premises. Today, we’ve sold over a million pots of curry paste with over 40 Great Taste Gold Stars and the title of Curry Product of the Year. But ultimately our heart remains in the same place: making authentic, award-winning food accessible to everyone.
